What Does Your Hearing Conservation Program Look Like?

A Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) is the best way to eliminate or suppress severe noise that can damage a worker’s ability to hear. In cases where noise cannot be reduced (e.g., equipment or processes that generate loud sounds) workers must rely on hearing protection devices to remove the noise hazard while maintaining productivity.

Because different jobs emit varying degrees of sounds (measured in decibels), and because ear canal size varies person to person, earplugs are a practical option that fit many workers in many work environments.

Three Steps to Improve Hearing Compliance

  1. Allow employees to choose the earplug that fits their ear canal and type of work.
  2. Employees will be more satisfied and invested in compliance outcomes when their personal preference is considered.
  3. Select the most comfortable earplug from several options, so that employees will wear them correctly.

The Relationship Between Decibels and NRR

What is Decibel Exposure?

A decibel (dB) is the unit of measurement for indicating the level, or intensity, of sound. Sound ranges on a numerical faint-to-loud scale from 0-194. The pain threshold for an adult begins at around 120dB, and OSHA requires hearing protection for factory workers who are exposed to 85 dB and greater.

What is a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)?

NRR simply means the noise exposure when wearing earplugs or other hearing PPE. The higher the NRR number, the greater the noise reduction. Subtract NRR from the actual noise level to determine noise exposure, or decibel adjustment.
