The LAW
ANSI Z358.1-2004 is the standard all Emergency Eyewashes and Emergency Showers are required meet. This standard includes guidelines on construction, testing, water pressure, flow requirements, location, operation and maintenance. There will be an ANSI approval marked on the equipment to show that it meets the ANSI standard.
The ESSENTIALS
Before you chose an Emergency Eyewash, there are several things to consider. Take a few moments to look over your options, and you’ll be able to make the best possible choice for you and your workers.
Personal Eye Washes
- Not ANSI or OSHA compliant
- Designed to supplement, but not replace a permanent eye wash station
- An ideal first response measure to use during transit to ANSI-compliant eyewash station
Gravity-Fed Eye Washes
- There are two categories of Gravity-Fed Eyewashes
- Stations that are filled with tap water and mixed with an additive or preservative. The eyewash mixture has a shelf life of 2-6 months.
- Stations that come with a bag or cartridge of manufacturer-prepared solution that will last 2 years
Plumbed Eye Washes
- Advantage of not needing to replace or clean gravity-fed units
- Require weekly activation as part of routine maintenance to prevent bacteria build-up
Faucet-Mount Eye Washes
- Attach easily to any standard or lab faucet
- No special plumbing needed
- May be activated with a single motion
Emergency Showers
- Required when there is a possibility of a corrosive to be deluged on your body, as opposed to a minor splash
- Can be ordered by itself or as a combination eyewash/shower unit
- If purchased as a shower only, an eyewash station must be located in the immediate vicinity
