One, The LawThe LAW
The standard that covers the basics of using signs is OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145. The standard designates what color the sign should be and how the headers are to be designed. Signs are mandated by many different sections of the OSHA rules as to the verbiage that OSHA wishes to see on the sign.

Two, The EssentialsThe ESSENTIALS
By knowing all your options for message, colors and construction, you'll be better able to select the best Safety Sign for every application.

Contents of a Sign

  • Header – A specific word or words to designate a degree of safety severity, always located in the uppermost portion of the sign. It is intended to direct attention to the potentially hazardous situation.
  • Legend – A specific short message that conveys the need to pay attention to a potential hazard or hazards, or take a necessary action to avoid such hazards
  • Symbol – A graphic representation to clearly convey a specific alerting message, supplemental to the legend message

Colors and Headers

  • Red = DANGER. Indicates an extremely or imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury
  • Orange = WARNING. Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury
  • Yellow = CAUTION. Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury
  • Blue = NOTICE. Indicates a statement of company policy directly or indirectly related to the safety of personnel or protection of property
  • Green = EMERGENCY EGRESS, FIRST AID LOCATION, SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND STORAGE. Indicates general instructions relative to safe work practices, remind of proper safety procedures, and indicate the location of safety equipment
