The LAW
OSHA 1926, Subpart M is the Fall Protection standard for construction. It sets a very broad goal of protecting employees from fall hazards. Many aspects of this standard are used as best practice when determining Fall Protection needs for general industry.
The ESSENTIALS
The key components of a Personal Fall Protection System can be broken down into three categories. All three must be in place and properly used to provide maximum worker protection.
Anchorage Connector
Anchorage Connectors are used to join the connecting device to the anchorage point.
- Anchorage Connectors include cross-arm straps, beam anchors, D-bolts and hook anchors
- An anchorage point or tie-off point is the area that supports the entire weight of the system and might include I-beams, rebar, scaffold structural members or lifelines
Body Wear
Body Wear is the personal protective equipment worn by the worker, such as a full-body harness. When choosing a harness, you have a variety of options, including:
D-Ring Location
- Center/Back D-Rings are found on every harness and are the only connective point allowed for fall arrest scenarios
- Side D-Rings are commonly used for positioning applications when workers need their hands free during certain work functions
- Chest D-Rings are used for positioning work, such as ladder climbing application
- Shoulder D-Rings are commonly used for lowering workers into tight confined spaces
Buckle Style
- Mating Buckles are the most common buckle style used by workers who do not share their harness
- Tongue Buckles are similar to a standard belt buckle. This type of buckle is ideal for those who share their harness. Material is generally a little thicker and stiffer in the tongue buckle area.
- Friction Buckles or Parachutes Buckles are easy to adjust between various workers. Simply step into the leg holes and pull the straps tight.
- Specialty Buckles are pictured in the photos at left
Harness Material
- Nylon provides excellent strength and comfort
- Polyester provides excellent chemical resistance in harsh environments
- DuraFlex is a combination synthetic nylon, polyester and specially formulated elastomer webbing that will stretch slightly when an employee walks and bends
- Nomex/Kevlar is flame-retardant and is commonly used in welding situations
- Teflon Coating is an invisible finish that provides superior water/oil repellency and protection against spills and stains
Connecting Devices
Connecting Devices are the critical link which joins the body wear to the anchorage connector.
- Connecting Devices include shock-absorbing lanyards, self-retracting lifelines, rope and grabs
